surface to air, in my life!

i felt like it was important for me to report back that i actually did get these, finally. they've been in my possession for a couple of months, but here they are, finally getting the wear and love and attention they deserve. i love them to bits.

simple + pretty from bailey doesn't bark

Re Jin, of Bailey Doesn't Bark, started her company, making simple but beautiful home accessories and jewelry, in 2008. The stark whiteness with unpretentious, straightforward illustrations and bold use of type have an elegance to them. I wish I had discovered her work and her website earlier!

Take a look:

open letter to OC

dear opening ceremony,

i love you, i really do (at least most of the time) - but, REALLY? REALLY NOW?

photos via openingceremony.com

here's a thought: instead of spending $460 on this "onesie," go raid grandpa's closet and hijack his high waisted khakis. add a pair of his old suspenders to DIY some shoulder straps. or, you know, just skip this look entirely. i strongly advise you do the latter.

xoxo,
nicolette

p.s., i'm semi-convinced that sometimes the designers at OC (and most other fashion houses) sit around trying to think of what ridiculous shit they can convince people to wear (and drop $460 precious dollars on) next. hipsters, you've been duped.

autumn street style

i'm loving these photos snapped by tommy ton of jak&jil from the spring 2010 fashion shows these last few weeks. i'll take one each of those studded loubous and the chanel (educated guess?) chain fringe gloves, please.

moschino - hearts & gold

all my early memories of moschino are centered around my mom, (probably not all too unique of a maternal memory for iranian-americans in their young 20's). looking at old pictures of my family, i realize how much my mother's personal fashion sense epitomized the eighties ideal. her naturally black, voluminous hair certainly didn't hurt to fit the bill. as a child, i remember my mom's long, red lacquered nails, her russian red lipstick, her big hair, and her love of shoulder pads and all things moschino. she wore the iconic moschino belt as a badge of pride, and toted over sized moschino handbags- often heart shaped. i guess in a way, twenty-three-years later, i realize how much her early love of moschino influenced my sense of style. and that might be the very reason why i'm enchanted by the newest moschino collection - it's so quintessentially eighties.

i love that gold chain jacket, and not even remotely in an ironic way.

consumption

three things:
1.) my ever coveted lula magazine (issue #9, featuring 2nd time cover girl karen elson) is finally on newsstands. i picked up my copy last night, after stalking the international magazine seller (smoke shop, 6th avenue) in my neighborhood for the last couple of weeks.

lula, please don't fold like every other magazine. i love you too much.

2.) in my fall-magazine-procurement session, i also got a hold of the new issue of bitch (which i also need to stress my adoration for, so if you have a moment, please go to their website and show them your love&support. a feature on illustrator kate bingaman-burt and her daily project "What Did You Buy Today?", where she catalogs every single purchase she makes. i find the goal of her project fascinating, along with the conversation it sparks about what it means to be an active consumer, but beyond that - her illustrations! just look. they're so simple, but they make me smile.

3.) and on the topic of consumption, CRIF DOGS.

do it. just do. it.

luella bartley, spring 2010

luella is consistently one of my favorite collections out of london fashion week, always, and even though her spring 2010 collection has taken a departure from her usually edgier, darker, mix & match aesthetic, i still absolutely adore it. the jump from her usual also allowed for more experimentation with her silhouettes, playing heavily with volume.

it's like the perfect set of clothes for a spring afternoon spent in the met, followed by a picnic in central park, and then a long evening stroll down fifth avenue. it's 1960's twiggy, meets holly golightly, meets nicolette mason (minus the monotone) - and i love it.

and the little black dress with the heart cut-out? brilliant. i'm all a-flutter over it.

and sorry to be so predictable, but yeah- as always, i'm a sucker for bows, hearts, and peter pan collars. i can't be blamed for being a girl that knows what she likes!
